Autism and biomedical support

Despite intensive research the cause of autism is not been found yet. Physicians therefore are talking of “Autism Spectrum Disorders”

Leo Kanner, a psychiatrist, first described autism as a separate disorder in 1943, including mental health problems, typical behaviors and a variety of physical symptoms as typical.
Later on psychiatrists saw that the physical symptoms as a result of the mental illness and therefore not treatable.

Bernard Rimland, father of an autistic son and psychologist himself, found that when treating physical symptoms typical behaviors got less or disappeared. This was the birth of the biomedical treatment. The Defeat Autism Now (DAN!) movement started. Many parent-support-groups, mainly in the U.S., let doctors and scientists seek treatment for their children.

The Autism Research Institute, (ARI), settled in San Diego, collects research papers as well as ratings of treatments they tried on their children. The evaluation of the results covered, that particularly dietary interventions, minerals, vitamins and trace-elements, as well as enzymes, hormones and so on, were considered successful with relatively little side effects.
